What is the Bayside Opportunity Center?

BOC is being developed as a community center serving Bayside and the greater Portland community. It is intended to bring people together while connecting residents with education, training, resources, services, and opportunities.

Who will BOC serve?

BOC is designed to serve the diverse Bayside community, including New Mainers, immigrants, refugees, longtime residents, families, workers, and others seeking community resources and opportunities.

What programs will BOC offer?

Planned activities include skills-based training, empowerment workshops, community events, referrals to services, workforce development opportunities, and other educational programming. Programming will grow as the center develops.

What is the Community Hub?

The Community Hub is intended to be a welcoming place where people can ask questions and get connected to organizations and services that can help. BOC plans to maintain information about available community resources and referral partners.

Will BOC provide job and skills training?

Yes. Plans include skills-based classes and training developed with educational institutions, labor organizations, and other community partners. Training may include workplace skills and opportunities connected to local industries.

Will there be workshops?

Yes. BOC envisions ongoing empowerment workshops covering practical topics such as financial literacy, job interviews, seeking municipal assistance, registering to vote, and obtaining a Social Security card.

Will BOC have spaces for community use?

Plans include flexible community and event space, classrooms, co-working areas, meeting and conference space, and quiet areas. Availability will depend on the completed facility and programming.

Will BOC offer food-related activities?

BOC's plans include food-service possibilities connected to the community center, including opportunities for gatherings and culturally diverse food experiences. These plans depend on the renovation and required health and safety approvals.

Will services be free?

Many BOC programs and referral services are intended to be available without participant fees. Some facility uses or activities may have fees to help cover operating costs.

Where will BOC be located?

BOC is working toward establishing the community center at 28 Portland Street in Bayside. The facility requires renovation before full programming can begin.
